National Clarion

 national clarion

The National Clarion

The Clarion cycling club was formed in 1895 after a group of likeminded individuals got together in Birmingham in 1894. It took the Clarion name from Robert Blatchford's socialist newspaper.

The National Clarion cycling club grew during the early 1900s with 8000+ members at one time and with sections all over the UK. Working class people were getting their freedom on bikes in the countryside and the Clarion was spreading the word and the newspaper to industrial towns and villages. In those days before most people could own a car, the bike gave freedom and fellowship...the Clarion thrived.

We now have some 650 members in 25 sections, which makes us one of the bigger cycling clubs in the country. Bikes still give us our freedom, freedom from the motorcar, the stresses of the rat-race and gives us great friendship, great friends around the country.

Whether we race, socialise, tour or meet in cafes, the Clarion is a CLUB, a true club not an association.

Classic Clarion greeting "Boots! & Spurs!"

Clarion riders right across the UK greet each other by saying "Boots!" and respond with the exclamation "Spurs!"

The tradition originates from when Clarion newspaper editor Robert Blatchford, used to sit in his barracks late at night telling stories with friends. To make sure that their listeners were still awake, the storyteller would say 'Boots!' those still awake duly replying 'Spurs!'. Satisfied that everyone was still awake, the story would continue.

"Boots and Spurs" continues to be the Clarion call to this day and is also the name of the twice yearly newsletter sent to all Clarion members.

Rules And Regulations

General Rules

We want you to share your cycling experiences and knowledge with us, and to help us keep the forum a friendly and lively place, please follow these simple rules and guidelines:

Be respectful and considerate to other members.

While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts.

Do not post anything that is obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, racist (including slang), hateful, threatening, or that otherwise violates any laws.

Advertising, spamming and trolling is not allowed. This includes using the forum, email, visitor messages, blog comments, picture comments and private message systems to spam other members.

Persistent trolling will result in a permanent ban.

Do not post others' phone numbers, addresses, pictures, instant messenger aliases, email addresses, etc., without their permission. Respect the privacy of other community members.

Do not start threads directed solely towards another member. Use the private message function to contact individuals.

Please wait a reasonable amount of time before bumping posts.

Please do not post pornographic or objectionable/inappropriate material. If it's not safe for work, it's not likely that it is appropriate for the forum.

Encouragement or facilitation of illegal activities such as software and music piracy and other intellectual property violations are not allowed.

Each member is allowed one login account. Registering with multiple accounts is not allowed. The Admin team reserve the right to merge multiple identities without warning or discussion.

Constructive comparative conversations about other forums, are fine, but please refrain from bashing other boards.

Please, no SHOUTING. Don't use all caps when posting. It is difficult to read and annoying.

Please do not post any affiliate or referral links, or post anything asking for a referral. Such posts will be subject to removal.

Please do not post advertisements or notices for contests without first getting permission from Admin.

We reserve the right to remove offensive posts without notice.

We also reserve the right to ban anyone who wilfully violates the forum guidelines, as access to our site and forums are a privilege and not a right.

While these guidelines cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way.

High Maintenance Clause

Any member who occupies a majority of admin or moderator time unnecessarily will be shown the door.

Advertising and Solicitation

We don't allow people to post threads or to send private messages or emails to members here that advertise or solicit any products, services, funds or donations without first getting permission from Admin.

Links in signatures:

Links to commercial products/services are fine, provided they do not promote illegal activities, are authorised by Admin, and the poster does not use CycleChat primarily to promote the linked site. However, Admin reserves the right to modify or remove any signature links at his sole discretion.

Linked sites should not violate CycleChat community standards. The Admin team shall be the sole arbitrator of what does and what does not violate community standards. (Examples include sites that promote the illegal drug use and/or sites that feature adult sexual images.)

Signatures should contain no more than two links.

Duplicate links to the same web site and/or domain are not allowed in signatures.

Avatars

The Admin team reserve the right to modify or remove avatars that, at their sole discretion, are deemed to violate community standards.

Affiliate Programs

You are not allowed to post affiliate links anywhere on the forums, without first getting permission from Admin.

Charity Rides and Sponsored Events

Many charities promote cycling as a fund-raising tool, and there are a great many rides for an amazing array of good causes.

You are free to post your questions about bikes, equipment and training in the respective forums.

Please also take note of the following:

Guidelines for specific forums

Know How and Technical forums

These forums are specifically for asking and giving advice, and should not be used for chit-chat. Off-topic posts that are not related to the thread may be removed without notice.

Classifieds forums

The classified forums are offered as a free service for members to buy, sell, trade and barter between each other.

To help avoid disputes, post editing is turned off in classifieds. If you need to edit an advert, please use the Report to moderator feature to tell the Admin team what needs changing and we'll sort it out for you.

Try to put a guide price on items you are offering for sale. If you don't have a fixed price in mind, ask for offers around a guideline figure. This is very helpful to prospective buyers and reduces "How much?" type posts and PMs.

Please also take note of the following when using the classifieds:

Don't offer anything obscene or illegal - use your common sense.
Commercial postings and advertisements are not permitted.
Posting details of items you are selling on internet auction sites is not permitted.
Please do not bump your advertisements.
Stick to discussing the items being offered. Off-topic posts will be removed.

Fenland Clarion has no control over buyer or seller, does not get involved in any transactions, and doesn't hold any personal contact details for any forum members. With this in mind please be careful how you conduct your transactions.

We reserve the right to remove any listings at our sole discretion without notice.
If you are selling your items on other non-auction web sites too, such as another cycling forum, please mention it in your CC advert.

Moderation

Although the administrators and moderators of forum will attempt to keep all objectionable messages off this forum, it is impossible for us to review all messages. All messages express the views of the author, and the owner of forum will not be held responsible for the content of any message.

The moderators try to keep the forums spam free, safe, and secure. If they ask you to do something, please do it. Please do not harass or intentionally annoy or insult the modserators.

Once you are permanently banned, you are considered Ban On Sight (BOS) and no longer welcome to post on forum. All subsequent new accounts will be banned on sight by the Admin team.

The owners of forum reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread or post for any reason.

We reserve the right to reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of any complaint or legal action arising from any message posted by you.

We also reserve the right to update and modify these guidelines as the needs of the community dictate to ensure the smooth operation of this site, the forums, and the community.

Go Ride For Youngsters

The youth section formed in 2010 and was initially based at Werrington sports centre, until October 2012 when we moved to The Embankment Athletic track on Bishops road. The main aim is to have fun on our bikes, but in a structured manner. For some it’s about improving confidence, while others enjoy the challenge of learning new skills or perhaps looking to get into competitive events.20140404 Friday group web The mainstay of our youth section is our regular evening coached sessions held at The Embankment Athletic track on Bishops Road PE1 5BW from 6.30 – 7.30 on the first and third Friday each month. These sessions are organised by our clubs British cycling qualified coaches, Marco Cipriani, Emma Emerton, Malc Jacklin and David Robinson. These sessions are aimed at youngsters from age 7 and upwards, although we are also happy to welcome younger riders if their level of concentration is sufficient for the one hour sessions.

2014 Tour Series web

These sessions aim to improve all riders skills and confidence on their bike with a variety of structured activities and games, while offering opportunities to take part in competitive events should they choose to. We use both the athletic track, for road skills and the surrounding grassed areas, for off road skills.

20150821 Teigan rollers web

The sessions are all year round, with the excellent floodlights and warm pavilion enabling us to continue through those dark winter months. Each session costs £5 which is reduced to £4 if you choose to join the club for £10 per year, and you will need to complete a parent consent form.

IMG 2934

We take part in many cycling disciplines including Closed circuit road racing, grass track racing, hard track both indoor & outdoor, mountain biking and cyclo-cross.

20150829 Mildenhall Evander LouisFor the older youth riders, typically around age 12 and above the club also offers youth and junior specific rides or clubruns with the seniors, with these generally including a teastop. We also like to include the rest of the family, so we also organise family rides at various venues and these are traffic free wherever possible.

IMG 4275

If the above sounds of interest to you then please contact us and we would like to welcome you to come and try what we do. The aim is to make things fun and enjoyable while still developing riders in a responsible environment.

20131108 Fenland cross1 reduced

We have a growing selection of bikes that can be borrowed for our sessions and even taken to some events where a specific type of bike maybe helpful. Our aim is to keep these bikes in use, so please help us to look after them and please let us know if there is a bike you would like to try, or if you just want some advice on buying your next bike. Helmets must be worn at all of our sessions however if you don’t yet have one or if you forget your own, we can usually lend you one. Currently there is no charge for any loan equipment, a policy which we hope to continue, however we hope you understand we may have to include a small charge if the need arises.

Club jerseys are available to borrow for events, or of course you can buy your own if you would prefer.

IMG 4121 We follow the British Cycling Go Ride scheme. British cycling is the internationally recognised governing body for cycling in the UK. Go Ride is their development programme for young people. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills. We aim to encourage the young people to sample the various cycle sport disciplines and start enjoying one of the fastest growing sports in the UK today. For those who are already involved and want to move forwards, Go Ride has it covered with the new Go Ride Racing competition programme.

This video clip gives some idea of events covered by the go ride set up http://vimeo.com/40096401

IMG 4083
This year we aim to participate in more events across a range of cycling disciplines including closed road circuit road racing, outdoor track riding (fixed wheel), grass track riding, mountain biking and cyclo-cross, as well as organised family rides.

IMG 4242

We are generally a happy bunch on our bikes, although we don't always have time to smile.
