Changes to Time Trial Regulations

At the CTT (Cycling Time Trials) National Council AGM on Sunday 5 December 2021, several changes were made to CTT’s regulations. In particular, two important regulations were passed and are implemented with immediate effect:

ALL riders must have a working front light attached to their machine. (Regulation 14(j))

ALL riders now must wear a helmet.  (Previously this requirement was only mandatory for under 18s).  (Regulation 15)

The full regulations can be viewed on the CTT website

Hartington Cycling

On 22-25 November 2021, the Fenland Clarion returned to the Peak District for four days of riding.

We stayed at Hartington Hall, a youth hostel in an impressive 17th century building in the village of Hartington south of Buxton. By the end of the trip we had ridden some 163 miles and climbed 16,381 feet.

High points included:

  • Getting to the top of “the wall”, riding from Langley through Macclesfield up to Cat & Fiddle road (the “Bottom of the Oven” climb);
  • the climb through Abney up to the gliding club ridge, riding along the ridge and descending into Eyam (and Eyam café);
  • the descent from Buxton raceway down to Glutton Bridge and on to Hollinsclough on the Thursday;
  • the last few downhill miles back into Hartington every day.

Best café stop: Hassop Station on the Monsal trail.

Worst: the famous Cat & Fiddle pub – “You need to book in advance to sit inside” (!)

Considering the time of year, the weather was kind to us with temperatures ranging from 3-8°C. There was a fair bit of wind-chill but no ice or frost. Our last morning gave us the brightest sunshine of the trip.

11 riders took part: Ian Todd (Ride Leader), Phil Gee, Ian Richardson, Chris Farrow, David Hallam, Lynden Leadbeater, Julian Tatam, Charlie Joseland, Phil Anders, Kevin Jones and Peter Miller.

Virtual Rides on Wednesday Evenings

20200425 Malc Karl Stelvio

In 2020 we started some Wednesday evening virtual rides, and as they were popular we will be continuing with them this year starting in November. The rides will continue through until early springtime, and will probably include a few race events in the new year.

We are planning a series of Wednesday online rides using both Zwift (www.zwift.com) and RGT events (www.rgtcycling.com). On alternate Wednesdays there will be a social ride of around an hour.

Riders are all very welcome to ride along with the group or at their own pace if preferred, these will be each Wednesday at 19:00 until further notice.

The first one will be on Wednesday 3rd November with Steve Clarke leading a ride on Zwift, and then on alternate weeks it will be on RGT or Zwift. Note the RGT rides are all accessible with a free membership, although you'll need the event code that can be found on the clubs website calendar (Calendar (fenlandclarion.co.uk)).

Please see the relevant websites to understand the requirements of your equipment, and that should explain all you need to know..

If you have any questions please let me know, although if it's a technical question please spend a bit of time looking through the websites for help before asking, although i will aim to help if i can.

Any questions please let me know, or join the discussion on the clubs Facebook page

FCCC Virtual JOGLE 2021

Following Fenland Clarions first virtual challenge in December 2020, the club committee has decided it would be worth doing something similar again this December.

So the challenge is still 874 miles during the month of December, just doing it the “other way round” this time. Surely the personal challenge will be to improve on last years total, at least for those who took part last year. Secondly how many riders can complete the full distance, it is only 28 miles per day, but that means every day.

Once again we will log the total mileages and add them to the totals on the club website, and there will be some spot prizes at the end, so everyone who takes part could win. So even if 874 miles is way beyond what you feel you could achieve, you can still set your own target and be up for a possible prize as well as joining in with the fun alongside your clubmates.

If you’d like some interim targets how about these,

4th Cat – 125 miles Inverness

3rd Cat – 275 miles Edinburgh

2nd Cat – 500 miles Manchester

1st Cat – 600 miles and you’ll be overlooking the Severn Bridge

Elite Rider – well that will be the full 874 miles

So what’s not to like, just log your miles either outdoor or on the turbo from the 1st to the 31st December, then on every Saturday send in your totals to log your distance. Via email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Youth Go Ride sessions return

We are now pleased to be able to announce that we can return to our Friday coached sessions at the Embankment Athletic Track, Bishops Road PE1 5BW, and will be from 18:30 - 19:30, These we will be starting this Friday 3rd September, and continue on the first and third Friday of the month, with the second session in December still to be confirmed. Please note that there is no longer a need to pre-book sessions, although it is a great help if we aware of any newcomers attending who are of course always most welcome.

We will be taking payments in cash, although bank transfers are also acceptable if you'd prefer, and we will be holding our prices at £4 per session, reduced to £3 for club members. We are still looking at alternatives to the no longer available Pingit app.

At all times we will aim to follow the recommended guidance with regard to Covid-19, and would appreciate all of your help with this.

We will have access to the pavilion but would still encourage care when indoors, and if the weather is good we will aim to use the outdoor space as much as we can.

No cars will be permitted on site unless there is a specific reason, and free parking is available in the adjoining Regional Pool car park in the evenings.

Anyone who is clinically vulnerable or has cold, flu or potential Covid-19 symptoms should NOT attend.

We hope that these conditions can evolve and not be too onerous as the Covid restrictions in general become more relaxed, although obviously this is very much an unknown situation.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and we look forward to welcoming you all back to our regular sessions, and enjoying riding our bikes in each others company once again.

Youth Racenights Return

We have four more evenings of youth racing coming up this autumn, starting on Friday 10th September, and continuing on 8th October, 12th November and 10th December, these are Cyclocross style, so we will be on the grass and every rider will get at least two races. These will still suit ALL of our youth riders, but with the added attraction of some riders from other clubs joining us for a few races, making it ideal entry level racing, and suitable for getting started with competitive events (NEWCOMERS VERY WLECOME). Each event will be in age groups, so even our youngest will be able to take part, and the oldest will riders will be under 16 age group (racing separately to the younger ones).

Please note that if any of you would like to borrow a club bike, please help us by being there by 6.15 latest.

Entry will be £5 on the day from 6.00pm with races to start at 6.30 and finish around 8:00 - 8:15 with occasional spot prizes and the series prizes will be awarded at the fourth event in this four event series on 10th December. Hopefully our youngsters will all want to try these events, they seem to have a competitive streak even when not racing, so it should make a nice change to our usual format.

We could also do with a few helpers on the night, so if you are able to help please let me know, preferably in advance.
Riders, the more the merrier for good racing. All youth riders welcome.
Cakes, always very welcome
Refreshments - ideally 2 - 3 to help out with them
Signing on - two people required
Timekeepers - three people required
Demo rider to lead the riders round the course
Helpers for setting up, could do with a couple of helpers who could ideally get there early
The details are on the British Cycling website with online entry available, although on the night entry is still available.

Details and online entry here.

This will be at our usual venue The Embankment Athletic Track, Bishops Road, PE1 5BW.

Time Trials

Time Trials are possibly the simplest route into competitive cycling. Competitors start off at 1 minute intervals and aim to cycle around a measured course in the fastest time possible. New riders are always welcome. No special equipment is required. You can enter with an ordinary road bike. Contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
